blog reflections

1)  My expectations for this course were that it would open my eyes to different works of art so that I can educationally look at a piece and have an appreciation for it.  I feel that this course has helped me do that because now I can look at a work and kind of understand what is being said by it.
2)  Art is anything that one can appreciate on their own individual level.  This is the exact same thing that I stated in my first discussion.
3)  As I first stated I do not have a favorite artists.  I also stated that by taking this course that it might be able to allow me to find a favorite artist.  However I still have not found my favorite artist but I have seen a lot more artists that I previously had not.
4)  I feel the same as I previously did about taking an online course.  I enjoy online courses because it allows more freedom and you can work your schedule around what you need it to be for the class.  This is a very similar answer that I gave the first time.

Reflection
1)  The three works that I chose were chosen because of their uniqueness.  Not every piece is a cut and dry drawing of a person but they are representations.  I found several of the pieces very interesting including the one on the skillet.
2)  The media that I chose to use to create my self portrait was the most common that I have.  I am not the best artist therefore using a pencil allowed me to change or alter my mistakes as I was making them.
3)  In creating my self portrait I wanted to make it very representative of me.  However I am not the best artists therefore I settled for making a representation as well as I could of what I felt I looked like.  Key features such as the scruffy face made it seem more representative because I didn’t shave this morning.
4)  As I already stated this piece shows me by the shirt that I am wearing as well as the scruffy face.
5)  The lines that I used for my facial features and the amount of color used to emphasize the features are different than the exact representation that one would expect from a self portrait.
6)  This project was fun to work on.  I think if I was a better drawer I would have enjoyed the project a little bit more.
7)  My final artwork is definitely not a million dollar piece but I enjoy it because it does represent me in my eyes when I look at it.

Project 5 reflection

1)  I reviewed the two projects that were posted when I did the article.  The first project was Labruna’s and the second was Collins.
2)  The reason I selected Dan Collins exhibit is because it was very similar to mine.  I wanted to compare my exhibit to his.  Surprisingly we did not have a single repeat in artworks.
3)  I did not have too many challenges in writing the article.  The hardest part was to find something I would have changed because I enjoyed Dan Collins exhibit so much.
4)  Providing a critique for my peers I feel is very beneficial.  By seeing how an outside person views your work you can get a better idea to see if your opinion came across the way you wanted it to.
5)  If someone critiques my exhibit I would love to see what they wrote.  By seeing an outsiders comments you can see if your work was understood the way you wanted it to be.
6)  I would rate my article as a 7 on the scale.  This is because I didn’t have too much to add to it because of how well it was done.  I provided positive criticism but very little negative criticism.  I know that will make the curator happy but they may have been looking for advice that I was unable to provide.
7)  This project was good to work on.  It really gave me a better idea on how curators work and how the critics think when they view the works.

week 16 video review

1)  In the Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T. J. Clark video I found it interesting that Greenberg thinks that writing about visual art is tougher than writing about literature or music.  I would have thought writing about music would have been much harder than the rest.  In the Greenberg on Pollock: An Interview by T. J. Clark I found it interesting that the painters of the Pollock era were extremely motivated by fame and money.  This is a huge motivation for most people however; sometimes I think the best works are created by people who work for their own satisfaction.  In the An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance (Giorgio Vasari) video I found the Donatello sculpture David very interesting.  Many art forms that involve the human body in its natural form are the best works I have ever seen.  In the The Critics: Stories from the Inside Pages video I found it interesting at how much influence a critic or group of critics can be on artists.  In the The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non-Western Art and Culture video I enjoyed seeing he Dahome art in all its form whether it was considered art or craft.  In the Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T. J. Clark in Conversation video I found it interesting how they discuss Pollock’s works in a historical perspective.  There are many ways to discuss Pollock’s works and the historical one is very interesting to listen to.
2)  I feel that the videos relate to the art criticism project in many ways.  For one there was a video that talked strictly about critics and how they affect artists.  By understanding how to look at works, interpret them, and to understand them the way the artist intended is a great benefit.  These videos talked about all these topics and emphasized this in many ways.
3)  As with all of the videos that we have seen they are very beneficial to our learning.  By seeing the way that criticism works, its affects, and what it means we learn a lot.  Everybody has their opinion on criticism but to see and hear it in action on the artworks helps to strengthen our knowledge on the subject.

Project 4

This project was not super hard for me to complete.  It was quite time consuming finding all the works and the ones that would fit into the exhibit.  One of the hardest parts for me to do in this project was to find the order in which I wanted to display the works.  Many of the works can be moved around based on color, size, artist, or what is depicted inside the work.  However, I believe I have found the best order and flow of the artworks that would make a person happy to look at what I have put together.  Hopefully everyone who looks at the exhibit will enjoy what they see and feel the connection with nature that I felt while putting it together.

week 14 and 15 video post

1)  From The Lowdown on Lowbrow:  West Coast Pop Art video I liked seeing the Zap comic works of art.  These comic books are very well drawn in my opinion and fun to look at.  In the Displaying Modern Art:  The Tate Approach video I learned that the museum was very popular and that they did not charge for admission.  After opening, about 4 million people had visited the museum in the first year.  With the Bones of Contention:  Native American Archaeology video I found it interesting how much these collections of bones really affected people.  It really does seem that we did not have any regard to any other human life than our own.  In the last video George Eastman House:  Picture Perfect I learned that the George Eastman collection has about 14,000 photographers displayed.
2)  All of these videos relate to our project.  Each one has a main subject that they focus on and they can back up with sources.  These collections are much larger than the one that we will be making but this is a great start to help us in our ideas.
3)  By getting different perspectives we learn a lot more about the subject.  They also give us other ideas that we can us in our project.  We are not setting up the project for display but rather putting it in a PowerPoint.  I noticed that the display of the works is also a huge aspect on how one relates to them.  These videos were very beneficial to me while creating my project.

week 13 video post

1)  I decided to watch the Abstract Expressionism and Pop:  Art of ‘50s and ‘60’s video because I find this time period in the world to be interesting and wanted to learn more.  The second video I chose to watch was the The Power of Art:  Rothko video.  This is because I found the title unique and was wondering what the power of art could be and was hoping to find out.   The next video I watched was Hockney on Photography.  I chose this because photography is very versatile and can be used so many ways.  The final video I watched was Andy Warhol:  Images of an Image.  I chose this video because I find Warhol interesting.
2)  In the Abstract Expresionism and Pop:  Art of the ‘50s and ‘60s video I realized I still have difficulty understanding abstract art.  However listening to the speaker helps me to understand works much better.  One work that sticks out to me is De Koonigs’s work titled “Morning:  The Springs”.  In the The Power of Art:  Rothko video I found it interesting that when commissioned to provide paintings for a restaurant it would be worth $2.5 million today. In the Hockney on Photography video I found the collage to be very good works of art.  In Andy Warhol:  Images of an Image video I enjoyed watching and learning more about the process of silk screening.
3)  All of the videos that I watched were very similar to our readings for this week.  All of these videos elaborated well on the topics discussed in our textbook.  Some provided very good view points on the topics that were not discussed in our readings.
4)  By getting different perspectives we learn a lot more about the subject.  You cannot rely on one source for all of your opinions on topics because your ideas will end up being biased.  Sometimes if you rely on just one source that source may be incorrect and that would make your conclusions incorrect.  That is why having the videos in our week are essential to our learning.

Burchfield Penney art gallery visit

1)      The exhibition
a.       The title of the exhibit is Artists/Veterans Art Collaborative:  Coming home, Connecting Families.
b.      The theme of the exhibit is war and veterans expressing themselves either during times of war or after they return.
2)      The Gallery
a.       The type of lighting to use is track lighting.  There are individual lights on each work so that one can clearly see what they are looking at.
b.      The walls are a plain white.  This helps to make take the emphasis off of the walls and onto the works that are displayed on it.
c.       The architecture of the inside of the building is made of drywall and glass.  They are bland and they help to focus ones attention towards the artworks.
d.      The walls and structures in the building help to funnel people in a certain direction.  There are limited openings that show the person who is inside the gallery the “correct” way to walk.
3)      The artwork
a.       The artworks to me seem to go from abstract works to more reality based recreations.  However I did see some exceptions while I was walking around.
b.      The artworks are similar in that they are about the same size and have similar colors.
c.       All of the artworks though have different frames or borders.  Also there are multiple artists with different styles.
d.      Most of the artworks are framed almost like any household picture some even protected by glass.
e.      The artworks are labeled by artist, title, material used, who or where the work came from, and the background of the work.  Some works have all of these labels and some have only a few.
f.        Most of the artworks are located close to each other but not too close to overshadow one another.  I would say that most of the works are about three feet apart and at eye level.
4)      Art criticism exercise
a.       The first artwork I chose to describe is Untitled.  This work was created by James Becker in 1994 and is of charcoal and chalk on toned paper.  The description provided stated that it is attempting to deconstruct gender roles and vulnerability.  This work shows a male who is unclothed but still has firearms near him.  His head is hanging and there are several people around him.  The lighting of the picture emphasizes the male in the center of the work with the background being darker.  The men in the background are standing in trench coats perhaps to symbolize high ranking government people overseeing this man.  I feel that that the artist was trying to say that some of the military people even though they are given guns they feel exposed and are over seen by the government but that there is nothing that they can do to defend themselves.
b.      The next artwork that I chose to describe is Mournful Partings.  This work is by Sam Sacco and was made in 2011.  This work is made from black and white photograph on metallic paper.  This work shows a man with his head hanging low sitting near his dog.  The lighting in the photograph emphasizes the person and the dog and their emotions.  I did notice that the dog showed was a boxer perhaps showing how the military must fight all the time.  I believe that this work is saying that leaving for war hurts everyone equally human or not.
c.       The last work that I chose to use was from James Becker titled Shatt.  This work was created in 2011 and is of oil on canvas.  This work shows a male smoking in his military gear while there is a war going on behind him.  There seems to be an emphasis on the man’s emotion.  I did notice that there was a flower in the man’s helmet perhaps showing that he is thinking only of peace.  I feel that this work is showing that war goes on even if someone’s mind is somewhere else but ultimately they must keep going.
5)      I feel that this art gallery was very interesting to visit.  The building was very clean and seemed very updated.  There was almost no one there when I went the only person I really saw was a person asking why I was taking notes at the Exhibit.  After speaking with this party, who was a person who helped to get the exhibit at the gallery, I found out that they really like to have notes or messages left for the people who created the work because they love the feedback.  Looking at the gallery in a physical perspective is quite different than looking solely at the works themselves.  I found this trip more enjoyable than my last actually.  There were several signs stating no photography permitted which I also agree with.  I was unable to find any photo's of the artwork that I chose to describe the only photo that I have to put in here is a flyer that I picked up near the exhibit.

week 12 video post

1)  I decided to watch the Matisse and Picasso video because I find Picasso’s work intriguing and sometimes difficult to understand.  I was hoping this would help me to better understand some of his work.  The second video I chose to watch was the Dada and Surrealism video.  This is because these two movements I discussed in my posting of the chapter questions.   The next video I watched was Expressionism.  I did not discuss Expressionism in my chapter question posting but I found this interesting in the book and wanted to learn more.  The final video I watched was The impact of Cubism.  I chose this video because it too goes along with the Picasso interest I have.
2)  In the Matisse and Picasso video I found it interesting that Gertude Stein was one of the first people who were able to recognize Matisse and Picasso’s work.  In the Dada and Surrealism video I found it interesting how George Grosz left Berlin before the Nazis arrived but his works of art did not make it. In the Expressionism video I found the work of Ashes very good.  This work focuses on the relationship between a man and women.  In The impact of Cubism video I found the large amount works that were discussed nice.  The more works you look at the more an idea can be learned.
3)  All of the videos that I watched were very similar to our readings for this week.  I did learn a bit more about Picasso which helped me to understand his works.  All of these videos elaborated well on the topics discussed in our textbook.

Mask making

This mask is very simple and is made of stone.  The eyes and mouth are proportionate and everything is simple.
This picture has many lines.  Both sides are balanced and reflective of each other.  Even though the mask appears large in size it is necessary for this culture and what it stands for.
This mask has a lot of lines.  Each line is colored and as you look at the lines the colors repeat.  This is a simple mask which will be like the one that I am going to make.

Here is my mask and the sketches leading up to it.  As you can see I used the elements and principles of line, repetition, and reflection to name a few.  Overall I found this experience quite enjoyable.  I am not the best painter, cutter, or designer but as I said I enjoyed this experience.  The sketch is faint but if you look close you can see it.

week eleven videos

1)  The first video that I chose to view was the African Art video.  I chose this video because I found the African art in our book to be very intriguing.  The second video I watched was the Buddhism video.  I find different religions and believes interesting.  This reason also applies to the next video that I watched which was the Hinduism video.  The final video that I watched was the Chinese Art: Treasures of the National Palace Museum.  I chose this video because I wanted to learn a little bit more about Chinese art.
2)  In the African Art video I found it interesting that African art influenced people like Picasso so much.  In the Buddhism video I found the idea of “Tanha” unique.  Being able to put all desires aside and avoid feeding your ego is difficult but must be able to be obtained.  In the Hinduism video I found the whole ceremony of “Aarti”, where the god or Brahma is honored, to be interesting.  In the Chinese Art: Treasures of the National Palace Museum video I found all of the vases or vessels to be interesting.  The amount of detail on them and what they represent are truly unique to that culture.
3)  All of the videos that I watched were very similar to our readings for this week.  The Islamic, African, and various religious cultures are discussed very well in both the readings and the videos.
4)  By getting different perspectives we learn a lot more about the subject.  You cannot rely on one source for all of your opinions on topics because your ideas will end up being biased.  That is why having the videos in our week are essential to our learning.

Week nine drawing

1)  I found it extremely difficult to use my hand as a subject matter.  Even though you only draw using one hand (usually), I think that I use my other as a stabilizer.  Typically I use my other hand to hold the paper and manipulate it how I need it.  These drawings are horrible in my opinion and I feel that if I had a different hand to use as a study they would be a little bit better.
2)  I used a pencil because that was the material that I had.
3)  Drawing is not my strong point and when I had to use my non-dominant hand the result was not good.  I think you can easily see which hand is my dominant and which is not by looking at the pictures.
4)  As I stated in question one I do not thing using my own hands as a study was a good idea.  The results I think speak for themselves.
5)  My non-dominant hand is something that I usually do not use and don’t plan to use in the future.  I am envious of people who are ambidextrous.

The drawings are very faint but if you look close you can see them.

Week nine videos

1)  The videos I chose are:  The Drawings of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance, The Power of Art: Caravaggio, and La Primavera (Botticelli).  All of these videos were chosen because they were topics that were discussed in our book.  Also the artists are ones that I learned to like based on their works that are in our textbook and I wanted to learn more about them.
2)  From the The Drawings of Michelangelo video I found it interesting is that Michelangelo denied the similarities between his work and Ghirlandaio even though the video can point this out.  In Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance I found it interesting that people in general in these times apprenticed with others at such a young age.  Leonardo Da Vinci apprenticed with Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence.  In The Power of Art: Caravaggio I learned that Caravaggio became an overnight success by bringing his experience to “The Martyrdom of St. Matthew”.  La Primavera (Botticelli) is a video that was very interesting and that I learned that Botticelli learned how to use drapery to add movement to his works from his apprentice, Fra Filippo Lippi.
3)  All of the videos that I watched were very similar to our readings for this week.  The artists and the Renaissance discussed along with key concepts were discussed in comparison to our textbook.
4)  By getting different perspectives we learn a lot more about the subject.  You cannot rely on one source for all of your opinions on topics because your ideas will end up being biased.  That is why having the videos in our week are essential to our learning.

Week 8 video post

1)  I chose each of the videos based on their title.  I chose the Gothic Architecture video because after reading in the textbook I found myself staring at the intricacy of all of the buildings with their peaks and points everywhere.  I chose the Cataclysm video because the idea of the Black Death is intriguing to me.  The Black Death was so horrific to a period of people and it came on so fast it is so interesting to learn how it gained so much control so quickly.  The final of the three videos we had to pick I chose the Greek Art and the Human Figure video.  I chose this video because any type of sculpture of the human body is art work to me.  The human bodies in all its forms even though they are all the same, vary vastly.
2)  In the More Human than Human video I found it very interesting how many statues that we accept as human like are not truly human.  In this video they take pictures of statues and translate them to normal human beings and what appears seems absurd.  In the Late Gothic Art and Architecture:  England, 1400 – 1547 video I learned that the many Gothic style churches that are still around are social centers as much as religious centers.  In the Cataclysm:  The Black Death Visits Tuscany video I found how the plague was transferred from area to area very interesting.  In the The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure video I found it interesting how that even in the classical period the people focused on the idealized person as we still do today.
3)  All of the videos relate to the text because they discuss similar matters.  Both the video and the textbook talk about the Gothic style, human statues, and the idealized and natural human sculptures just to name a few topics that are similar.
4)  I find that the films are very beneficial to our learning.  Each video provides different materials that were not discussed in the textbook.  Also it seems that the videos are better able to elaborate on the topics better than the textbook can in my opinion.

Week 7 video post

1)  One of the key concepts or ideas that I learned from the Prairie Style video was that Frank Lloyd Wright was so influential especially on people like Ron Thom and Dan White.  One of the key concepts that I learned from the Architecture: the Science of Design video was how much wind can affect a skyscraper.  I did not know that in high winds certain skyscrapers can move three meters.  One of the key ideas that I learned from the Classical Architecture video was that the fight between classical and modernism in architecture is still alive.  I thought that modernism was much more popular but after this video I am doubting that.  One of the key concepts that I learned from the Call for Planet Earth:  Sustainable development and Architecture video was the living roof.  This roof has a grass floor on it and it helps by keeping the heat in the winter and the coolness in the summer.
2)  All of the videos add a depth to the different types of architecture, the materials used, and how the creations of one type of architecture greatly develop the other.  These are all things that are talked about in our textbook.
3)  Each film that I watched has great information that it provides.  These films have similar information to our book but they expand on certain ideas and provide different reasoning why certain things have been done.  Getting different points of view on architecture and reasons why people create architecture is beneficial to the learner because you cannot rely on just one source for all of your answers or else you get a biased viewpoint.
4)  I chose the Last Call for Planet Earth:  Sustainable development and Architecture video because of the four videos it sounded like an environmental video similar to the Green architecture idea discussed in our book.  I am very interested in preserving our environment otherwise we will exhaust our resources before our children will have the opportunity to create their own architecture.

Week six installation post

Step 3
1)  Installation art is an artwork that fits in a designated space and draws your attention towards it and commands the space.
2)  Almost any type of material can be used in installation art.  Most of the art is three dimensional so material used is three dimensional.
3)  Installation art is created for any reason that art is created.  It is expressive and has great meaning to the creator.
4)  The installation art that I found most interesting was Reconstructed Icicles, Dumfriesshire by Andy Goldsworthy.  This was most interesting to me because it is natural and is found in nature.  I am fond of almost any art that is found in or from nature.
Step 4
1)      The piece of art that I found most inspirational was Reconstructed Icicles, Dumfriesshire by Andy Goldsworthy.  This was most inspirational to me because it is natural and is found in nature.  I am fond of almost any art that is found in or from nature.
2)      The theme that I am going to use is Consumerism.
3)      The materials that I am going to use are premade objects created from paper, wood, and cloth.
4)      The installation is located in my residence because I have limited area to use for the installation and I found an area that could be used in the installation as well along with adding other objects.

Creating the installation was a project that I enjoyed.  I often changed my mind on which piece of consumerism I was going to focus on however my supplies were limited so that’s how I was able to narrow it down.  I also kept adding and taking things away on the specific was that I wanted to present the work.  Creating this work gave me a much better understanding of installation art and how difficult it can be.

Week six video

1) The main concept I learned from the Through the Eyes of Sculptor video was that a sculpture from a stone usually first starts with a sketch followed by a clay model and then a plaster cast before a stone is even touched.  The main concept I learned from the Glass and Ceramics video was a statement that ceramic materials can be stronger than steel.  The main concept I learned from the Installation Art video was that installation art itself is an individual concept and changes dramatically with each artist.
2)  The videos directly relate to the readings because they discuss sculptures, ceramics or crafts, and installation art which all were discussed in the chapters that we read this week.
3)  All of the videos that we have seen in the course so far are beneficial to the text that we are reading that week and I feel sometimes even explain the concepts a little bit more thorough.  These videos give alternate explanations for works of art and visually show how works are created.

Week six

1) Here are the two blogs that I reviewed:
http://kellysueo.blogspot.com/
http://jsentiff.blogspot.com/

2)  The first blog that I had to review did not have a project one so I was unable to post a comment on that blog.  The second blog I thought that all the images shown matched well with what they were labeled as.  Just like as in my posting I found that several of the pictures could be used or labeled with other elements as well.
3)  In the first blog there were no works of art that I had the same as.  In the second blog I chose the same work titled Indefinite Divisibility by Yves Tanguy.  Both myself and Jeff thought that this work was interesting and it made us feel that we wanted to be at the beach.
4)  The first blog itself peeked my interest with every work chosen because they all seemed abstract.  Abstract art is interesting to me because I do not understand it.  I almost need someone to explain what it means before I can understand it.
5)  I feel that reading my peer’s reflection helped out.  This gave me another perspective on what people see.  Sometimes my perspective is completely different and it is valuable to know what others are thinking.
6)  At this time no one has responded to my postings but I am assuming this is because I do my work early in the week because I am usually busy later in the week and cannot log on.  I feel most of the other students do their work at this time.  However when I do have the time to read the comments I am assuming they will be posting I am sure they will be helpful because it will give me another perspective.

First art gallery visit

A)     Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
a.       Hum made by Roberto Longo created in 1953.  This work of art impacted me because it seemed like a bunch of phones lines being connected in a larger scale.  This made me think that technology is growing so fast and almost dwarfing us which is evident in how big it is.
b.      The Holstein Manifesto by Matthew Ritchie created in 2008.  This work just grabbed my attention.   This work was beaten up because it had cuts and holes in it but the video was still playing on it.
c.       The Quiet of Dissolution, Firestorm by Sonja Braas created in 2008.  This work shows a city that is going to be getting engulfed in flames but there are still many lights on in the city as if people didn’t even care what was going on.  This makes me think that people really do not even notice nature and the affect it can have on us.
B)      Which artworks do I feel a Connection with?  Why?
a.       Winter by Emile Pierce Branchard created in 1928.  This work reminds me my uncle’s camp that I often visit.  It is a beautiful picture that seems peaceful and calm that you do not want to disturb.
b.      Carcass of Beef by Chaim Soutine created in 1925.  This work reminds me of the meat that we eat.  I am a hunter and I prepare my own meat and this is a work of art that takes me back to when I am preparing my own food.  This work is not for everyone and can seem gruesome to others.
c.       Thirty Illustrations for Histoire naturelle by Buffon created by Pablo Picasso in 1942.  This work has many pieces that all depict different animals and nature.  Being a hunter and outdoorsman these pictures were a description of many of the things I see when I enjoy myself outside.
C)      Which artworks would I like to know more about?  Why?
a.       Indefinite Divisibility by Ynes Tanguy created in 1942.  This work is an abstract work and for me almost any abstract work of art makes me question what it means because they are hard for me to interpret.
b.      Nomad by James Rosenquist created in 1963.  This work looks like the artist just created it leaving their supplies on the ground.  The paint seems to be dripping as well.
c.       Composition with Stripes by George LK Morris created in 1945.  This work has a flag in the middle of the painting but it does not show stars and the longer that I looked at the picture the more negative appeal it seemed to have on me.
Here are the works that I was able to find on the internet.  I did not feel comfortable taking pictures of the works in the gallery.

Sonja Braas, The quiet of dissolution - Firestorm

Week five post

1)  Creating my logo was an interesting task.  I had to think long and hard about what would represent me.  It was a fun experience
2)  To think of what I might have wanted to use in my logo creating I thought about all the things I do, enjoy, and are a big part of my life.  Then I looked for pictures of how I would like to draw mine to help ensure I had adequate drawings.
3)  The most important discovery I made in creating my logo was that to an outsider my logo would look kind of imposing.  If you did not know what I liked to do or where I worked one might be confused to look at my logo.
4)  I learned from the media we watched and read was that logo’s can be quite manipulative.  These videos were very informative and helped me in creating my logo.
